Show 96 Hugo's mouth opened in astonishment. Harry Ward squinted toward Hugo. Karl looked from one man to the other, growing excited. "I'm tellin' you," Mayo went on, "in all of Canaan you'd not find another man who would forbid gambling in his own home just on account of some lines in a newspaper. On the wild coast of County Mayo where I grew up, there was decent men a-plenty, but never a one more decent than Hugo here. That's the God's truth." The euchre club members began to agree out loud with Mayo Culley, even the ones who'd objected to playing euchre without pennies. Harry Ward ran a finger over his jaw as he studied Hugo with still-narrowed eyes. "How 'bout it, Hugo?" Ward asked softly. "Would you like to be chief of police for the borough of Canaan?" "I...my job in the mill...," Hugo stammered. "Don't let that stop you," Ward told him. "I'm on friendly terms with superintendent Charles Bonner. He wants honest government in this town, too. You could start as police chief tomorrow, if you want to. Bonner will make everything right with your foreman." "Maggie Rose?" Hugo asked, overwhelmed, looking to his wife to help him decide. "Whatever you want is fine with me, Hugo," she told him. Karl wanted to shout his encouragement -- he'd be so proud to have his father become chief of police -- but he knew he mustn't break into the conversation between his father and Burgess Ward. Instead, he bounded up the stairs to find Kathleen, who was lying |
