Show The Speed of Light Butch and Fenn Stories 14 "How long did it take?" "Nothing. Maybe a second." "You're kidding! It's that fast. From the backstop!" "Quiet, Fenn. Wait." A minute later, at the second, I flash my light north. Then I help blind old Fenn out and down through the roof in the dark. We meet Butch on the street. "One second," I say to him. "It took maybe one second." "No," he says. He is walking. "How long?" Fenn catches him. The fronts of the houses are all dark as graves. "No time." he laughs. "The speed of light." "Yeah, well, we found that out." Fenn says. "Butch," I stopp him. "Here." I give him back the watch. "Yeah," he says to me. "See you later." "What! You're not sleeping out!" Fenn is hopping a little. "I'm going to go home," I say. "I think I'll go home tonight." I turn in the starlight; the pavement fairly glows. "Yeah, oh great! The record down the drain and where do I go?" Fenn says. "Where should I stay tonight?" |
