Show 24 Behind us, a gasp went up from the Indians. Just as we reached where the path first came across our route, the stallion went by in a white blur. Bee kept laboring directly up. Again, when we reached the place where the path made its second cross in front of us, the stallion went by, leavin' a billow of dust for us to eat. Again, Bee held the course. Moments later we were nearin' the top--one more switchback to cross-with the incline steeper than ever, almost perpendicular, and, sure enough, the stallion went past us. Only this time he was heavin'. It was then Bee gave her earth-shakin' bray an' dropped to her knees! She pulled the incline. (Her eyes buldging.) And she pulled harder. (Her neck going stiff.) And we went up. And up. And over. The honk of the mules below told us we had won. We were entitled to the Death Chase. In this manner is a chase conducted. All gather at the outboundry. An arrow is shot high into the sky. Where it lands |
