Show 11 budge 'em. I even rigged up a trumpline and took the lead position to show Emmett and Sadie we were all in it together. They ignored me. That's why we found ourselves in Utah. It is said by those who pretend to know that a mule resists diseases. Some even say a mule cannot catch a disease. That is not so. A mule is susceptible to the ailment of glanders. And a mule is susceptible to the ailment of stubbornness. If'n you want a mule to go, it'll stop. If'n you want a mule to stop, it'll go. For instance, if you're pickin' corn with horses hitched to the wagon, you can simply drop the reins while you pick the corn and the horses will stand still 'till you get back. Mules is different. Once they see you drop the reins, they're on their way back to the barn. I once knew a muleskinner who figured he had outwitted his mule when he thoughtlessly dropped his reins. Quickly, before the mule could move, the 'skinner stamped his foot down on 'em. For a full second that man congratulated himself on outwitting a mule. Then the mule shifted his rear a couple of feet and sat down on the wagon tongue. It broke. |
