Show 240 CHAPTER VII So ended the Great Oji War. The consequences were quick in coming, quietly accomplished, and less painful than might have been expected. The Colonel did not press charges, nor did he call the Detachments together. (Coincidentally, the Detachments drove back to Oji, the following morning, over water-pocked roads, past streaming trees: the autumn rains had begun.) The sequence of events was never clear, but rumor said that he e merly put in a call to General Greaves, and by noon orders /\ were on their way. The Detachments were released from their previous assignment, and reattached to the Engineers for quarters, rations and administration. Combined Headquarters were established in Naka. Major Hammond was transferred to Wakkanai, and the Satterwhites took over his house. Carlton, who had gone to see how the Bridge looked upside down in the moonlight, was relieved of his duties and returned to the States. (The Lamberts, however, were transferred to Kyoto, and Franklin placed on the General's staff.) In the shuffle Yosh's promotion was held up for a while, but finally came through. Peace descended on Oji, no breach apparent. From the Detachments' point of view, the only favorable result was the birth of Mike's baby, which arrived fat and happy, |
