Show 207 The General continued his hunting and fishing trips with Smead, but more and more often he came back to change and shower, spend a barely-gracious ten minutes with the Colonel and Mrs Satterwhite; then he departed for Naka. And there he acted almost as much host as guest. Franklin he patted on the back, avuncularly, then the three sat around with martinis in their hands, or gathered around the kitchen table for a meal Harriet had ordered the servants to put together. At first she had been formal, served full-fig in the dining-room; but soon the relationship was easy enough; the kitchen was fine. During these days something luminous appeared in Harriet's face, augmenting the perfection of her figure and her clothes. Of an afternoon, walking with the General in the garden, she looked fresh, almost girlish; and as she bent over the flowers or laughed up at him Phyllis and her guests (having coffee across the way) could hardly drink for comment.
