Show 102 CHAPTER VIII Standing on the supply-room steps, Sid saw Sergeant Koontz approach. Koontz gave his neat salute, to which Sid responded as well as he could, considering the fact that one hand held papers and the other a cigarette. "How are things, Sergeant?" "All right, sir - - generally." He looked toward the counter, where Corporal Biggs moved about in his vague, targetless manner. "However" - - Koontz hesitated - - "could we have a word?" "Sure. What's up?" The rustlings inside grew quiet, and Koontz raised his voice, "Could we step aside, sir? Supply corporals have big ears." And Biggs began to count the messkits. They walked down the steps, and stood below an exuberantly flowering cherry. "Sir, this isn't my business. I'm not supposed to know - - about Lieutenant Jennings - - but things get around." His eyes searched Sid's face. |
