Show Nada Commercial Club was given as the source. When I happened on a yellowed copy half a century afterward I found that pioneer optimism had betrayed the writers into dizzy extravagances mixed with factual information. Here are passages: "It is not generally known that good Government land can be secured at the present day; especially with the proper climatic conditions, good water, and other resources necessary to make home-steading a pleasure and a success; but. . . Utah offers excellent opportunities for those desirous of securing independence by acquiring land where success is already assured." The land it was said, "is on the main line of the Salt Lake Route, 545 miles from Los Angeles and 230 miles from Salt Lake. . . It lies in the beautiful Escalante Valley, bordered by high, snowcapped mountains which supply subterranean rivers of pure water. . .The altitude of 5060 feet insures cooling relief from summer heat, and winters replete with healthful and invigorating climate." The soil "has proved the equal for production of any on earth." "Now that the big-bear of the pessimist has been driven from our midst, and the country has proven all that we hoped, we propose to allow those of you who are sure to follow us, the advantage of our assistance in locating and establishing a home among us." "The present age will go down in History as the 'back-to-the-soil' Era. The city dweller, city worker and property owner as well as the farmer on the small tract of land barely eking out his living is looking forward to the time when he may be able to get out on to a larger tract where he will have more elbow room, and bring nearer that much sought after condition, a state of perfect contentment; and to insure future independence for himself and his children." |
