The house faces south on a 0.33 acre site. There are lawns to the south, east, and west. A large shade tree is in the southwest corner. At the rear of the house, is a two car garage with a tin roof. The garage was built around 1955. Next to the garage is the upper portion of an old bus. A shed, a barn, and a chicken coop formerly associated with the property are gone. A chain link fence to the north and bushes to the east border the property. The principal elevation is on the south. There is an elaborate Queen Anne shingle pattern and a flat Palladian window in the gable. The brick is laid in a running bond. Both brick and shingles have been painted white. The foundation is granite which has been plastered and scored . It was painted red several years ago, as were the two courses of brick at the water table. The most prominent feature of the house is the large fixed sash parlor window and transom . The transom has a brick hood is accented with a pair of rock-faced bricks. The original front door with a large oval glass remains, but the hopper has been painted shut. A center Tuscan column on the porch has been removed and the wooden porch deck replaced by concrete painted red. On the east elevation are two pairs of one-over-one coupled windows (with relieving arches) and a pair of smaller windows at the rear. The west elevation features similar windows, but found singly not in pairs. To the rear of the house, the north elevation, is a lean-to addition. The 1938 tax card describes this addition as "Box car used as lean-to." 2 The roof is half pyramidal hip and half gable. The house has asphalt shingles. The central chimney was removed sometime after 1938. The front door leads inside to a small ante-room . This room and the large east parlor were paneled probably in the 1970s. The ante-room leads to the parlor and a small bedroom with ceilings 10 feet high and the original molding intact. The east parlor is an exceptionally large room. A stove flue is visible on the west side. The kitchen and bath are at the rear of the house. The kitchen was remodeled in 1994. 3 The bathroom and a portion of the hall were remodeled in 1995. The enclosed staircase is at the center of the house. The bedroom under the projecting gable is the only finished room upstairs. Access to the cellar is from a staircase in the lean-to. Though a railroad box car, the lean-to appears as a screen porch. See continuation sheet 1 The current address of the property is 511 East 8800 South. In 1986 the city of Sandy convened their address system m match the system for Salt Lake County . The original address of the house was 1017 East 200 South . 1 According to the current owner , the previous owner had also said the lean-m was a box car.
