Show NEXT ORDER OF BUSINESS To: Beth Kaeding, Pete Hovingh, Fred Reimherr, Hartt Wixom, Les Jones, Brian Beard, Dicjc Carter, Bob Golten, Bob Turner, Pete Carlson, Gerry Kinghorn, Michael Moss, Don Duff, Lillian Hayes Now that we have some updated information on Trade-Offs being made on public lands resources in Utah - the CUP for the MX missile - pulled together in a High Country News article, I will start next week to lay the ground work in developing national media interest and exposure on the flagrant use of political power in deciding public land uses. I've talked with a retired Editor of our Manitowoc newspaper about which media to approach and how - in order to get their interest in the Utah issues aroused: the three TV network expose programs, i.e. "60 Minutes", "Prime Time" and "20/20 " as well as major newspapers. I plan to recommend sources of information as a follow-up to those who respond. Some of you may be called upon... for your expertise in certain aspects of these issues. The approach I plan to take ( suggested by an environmental attorney here, and, avid Sierra Club member) is that the MX missile is too controversial a proposal - as debated both in the west and in Congress - on issues of costs, effectiveness, and environment - to be used as a political Trade-Off to sustain an unjustifiable pork barrel water project such as CUP. That there Is enough evidence of issues here - that this Trade-Off is being used for crushing opposition to Congressional procedures and mandates on public lands management to warrant putting investigative reporters on this story. I'll keep you informed about any follow-up interest. You keep me informed of developments. Dorothy srrTishA^<+p 1445 N. 10 S t . ° Manitowoc, Wis. 54220 414-684-3500 A p r i l 11, 1980 |
