Show I PROGRAM Project Intent: To addres the need for water research and testing and to promote increased awareness of water conservation in the Salt Lake Valley. In Response, 1 will design a Water Research and Education Facility. The research facility will be designed for the express purpose of discovering viable means and methods of water reuse in this saline environment. It will be constructed of heavy, austere materials which reflect the modernist idea of man's control over nature. Its presence will depict the permanence and resilience of man amid a somewhat hostile climate. In contrast, the educational facility will express a delicate balance of nature. Light and transparent, it will provide minimal protection and separation from its surroundings. A third space of negotiation, discourse, and internalization will be ' suspended' between the research and education facilities, attempting to frame a space for discovering the need for both conservation and technological intervention for survival. The architecture will also seek to be, in itself, a medium for education. Water collection and retention systems will be incorporated as key elements of the architecture. Methods of water use and reuse will be exposed to view, highlighting a closed- loop hydrological cycle incorporated within the research area. The facility will seek to become a place conducive to meditation and discourse. A place wherein dividing subcultures may come together to regain an appreciation of our unifying past, internalize our regional water risks, and discover the necessity of both human technology and ecology in sustaining our desert water. A Place to Educate Gallery for Water Education Interactive Classrooms - Discover the Water Legacy of Salt Lake Valley - Learn about the looming Regional Water Crisis - Understand Personal Role of Conservation - Discern Human Impact on Water Resources - Discover Efforts in Testing Gray Water A Place to Discern Research Liboratory Greenhouse - Effects of Gray Water on Plants and Effluent Salinity - Effectiveness of various Water Collection and Retention Systems - Research Drought- Tolerant and Native Plantings as Water Filtering Agents Discourse / Negotiation Space - The Coexistence of Man and Nature - Determine the Necessity of Ecology and Technology for Survival 16 |
