Show 258 WAR FOR THE COLORADO RIVER was originally controversial because of the belief on the part of some conservationists we would destroy wildlife in one section of the area. That dam, Echo Park Dam, has been eliminated. "I think their fears were groundless, but it has been eliminated and removed - that particular bone of contention. So again I hope that we can have positive action on that as rapidly as possible." The arguments resumed, but most of the members paid little attention to them. The issue was cut and dried. The leadership on both sides had spoken. The general attitude was: Let's get it over with and go on to other business. This was not the attitude of Rep. Haley of Florida. He had a small table set up in the well of the House, and on it he placed a pitcher of water and a glass. Then he took from his pocket pieces of Chinle shale, dropped them into the glass and poured water over them. Within a few seconds they had disintegrated to mud. This, he warned the House, was the dangerous situation which existed in the area of Glen Canyon Dam.319 Rep. Udall of Arizona hurried to the table. Into a glass of water he dropped a piece of rock which he claimed had been taken from the Glen Canyon Dam site. It did not dissolve. With the rock still in the glass, Udall drank the water.320 Haley had used real Chinle shale. Udall had used another kind of shale that was much harder. Many congressmen laughed heartily at the performance, a few moments' relief from the tedious arguments. Rep. Martin, the veteran Republican leader, ended the debate with an appeal to the House to pass the |
