Show ------------------Juror of Selection and Awards - - - Juror's Statement It is always exciting to have the opportunity to view art works from a combined region, and to discover the strength and merit of the various paintings by artists from each region. But on many levels, this is not a regional show. With the national membership of some of the societies under the umbrella of this organization, the scope and the quality of this exhibit is national. In fact, because of the active participation of the various societies' members, this show has stronger local vitality and a larger number of entries. During the multiple viewing of the entry slides, I made no attempt to even out the accepted entries amongst the different watercolor groups. My effort was made completely and simply to select the quality from the total entry. If there were any noticeable difference between each area's entries, it was probably more reflective of how actively each society engages their membership to take part in exposures to a broader range of good art in general. But I didn't notice any preference in subject matters, nor._were there any predominate tendencies towards different artistic approaches, from state to state. Continued from recent years' economic conditions was the noticeable number of smaller paintings among the total entries. There are a number of paintings in this show which go beyond the technical aspects of good design and good execution. They captured each artist's personal vision and conviction. And we can't help but being moved by the artist's passion and authority. These paintings transform us, teach us something about ourselves and the world around us. And we say to ourselves, that's what I want, that's what I have been striving for. The generosity of all the artists who are a part of this process made this show possible. I like to share my feelings that art in itself is not competitive, and that any real measurements can only be made against our own growths, from year to year.
