Show INTERVIE\-7: Nartinez Page 7 from ew Hexico? ~1: Yes, yes we had some of our relatives and our friends from the places that we lived. And the village around there weren't many that we didn't know, but we knew the place and we knew their names and everything, but we didn't get to know them until we were here. VM: In Bingham, did the people from New Mexico and the Ruerto Ricans and the people from Old Mexico, did they all tend to live in the same different areas, but together? MM: Yes, when we came to here, we didn't see any difference. We start figuring, well, at first we started saying we were SpanishAmericans like we were taught in the schools. But then, they started teasing us that we were trying to be more ... and I don't know in what way they figured, so then we changed and we didn't mind, we just start calling Mexicans. And the Puerto Rico people that were there they say that they had come during the World War, that's when they brought the Second World War. And there were scores of people that didn't have enough workers so they brought, I think they brought a big number from there, that's when they came over here, as I understand. VM: Did you notice, any time that you lived in Bingham, did you notice any friction between any of the various groups of people, like those from Puerto Rico, or those from Old Mexico, or those from New Mexico, any sort of friction as groups? |
