| Abstract |
Merrill (b. 1961) enlisted in the U. S. Army Signal Corps in July 1980. He was stationed in Stuttgart, Germany, until December 1990, when his unit shipped out to Saudi Arabia. The ground war portion of Desert Storm began in January 1991. Merrill describes life in the military and talks about his political views. He retired from the military in 2001. Interviewed by Frances Merrill. 29 pages. |

Show ROBERT L. MERRILL March 22 2004 had to get ready doing our physicals, doing our wills, and power of attorneys· all the thing that you have to have done before you can go to war. Also, I was married to a different lady at that time, and we had four children at that time. And, so, it was difficult on her. But we actually shipped out on the 17th of Dece1nber of 1990. And the war actually started-or the ground war actually started 17 January, 1991. FHM: So where did your family stay while you were there? RLM: They stayed-we had housing. It was called Pattontville. It was a housing area in Germany. FHM: So she stayed there while you were gone? RLM: Yes, she stayed there. And they had a wives group that would keep them informed of things that were going on, and actually what was going on there, and when we'd come home and things like that. FHM: Do you remember arriving at the war zone, and what it was like? RLM: When we arrived it was at night. We arrived at an air base. I don't recall which one it was at this time. But when we got to where we were staying it was at- they called it Seaside, and we were right by the sea. And I mean we could walk right there within a minute, or two minutes, time. FHM: Which sea was it? RLM: I'm not sure. I'm not sure. FHM: What country was it in? RLM: It was in Saudi Arabia where we were at, and it was very hot. It was December. But the 5 |
