Show JOHN C. (JACK) CHNELLER J L 2, 2004 JAC: Yes and you couldn t do it. Then the Army personnel were all up on th ma1n deck. They'd get their Army blankets out and were shooting craps. A lot of those guys came back millionaires, I think. A lot of them came back poor too. Do you know that when I was discharged from the Navy, they gave you $300 mustering out pay? A lot of the guys got it and then they blew it and had no way of getting home. They'd get tangled up in New York or something and lose all of their money and have no way of getting home. So when I got out, they only gave you a hundred dollars, and then a hundred dollars each month until you got your three hundred dollars. BEC: Oh, I see. I wonder if that took care of the problem. JAC: I don't know. But you know those troops trains were really something, too. I swear that they had square wheels on them. They were the hardest damn riding old things. Then they had an old coal burning pot bellied stove in them to keep them warm. It was cold. BEC: The stove didn't work? JAC: No. BEC: This is from the Deseret News. [reading] "August 1945, the war ends." JAC: Yes. Then this one here. BEC: [reading Norfolk, Virginia, paper] "Nazis quit; VE Day officially tomorrow." Is that where you where, Norfolk, on VE Day? JAC: No, we were in the Pacific on VE Day when Germany quit. BEC: That's right, I remember you told me that. JAC: I've got a cedar chest in there full of stuff like this that you wouldn't believe. BEC: Really? Memorabilia? 36 |
