Show JOHN . (JA K) CH ELLER BEC: What a unique time that was. JAC: Yes, that was great time. BEC: How long did you stay in New York then? J 2 2004 JAC: Oh, we stayed there for three or four or five days. You know this transport went so far and so many miles that it picked up electricity on the water. We'd have to pull into dry dock in Hoboken, New Jersey, and have it de-magnetized. We'd have to take all our watches and clocks off the ship. Then they'd reverse polarity to get that electricity out of the ship. BEC: Right, yes. JAC: A lot of people didn't know that and I didn't know that either. If I hadn't been in the Navy, I wouldn't have known it. You pick up all that electricity. I know at night, you'd go up and stand on the deck and look out and you could just see the phosphorescence on the ship just a sparkling. Then we'd go into Hoboken and we'd get maybe a week off. We'd maybe go into Germantown and party and Jersey City. I kind of liked New York but I wouldn't want to live there. It's too congested. I've got to have the space. Those people all live in tenement houses and that's not for me. Yes, we'd get a day or two off in each one of these places and get to go in and have some R&R. We went down through Gibraltar in the Mediterranean Sea and Marseille, France. BEC: So after that trip in New York, on VJ Day, you went back and picked up more troops? JAC: Oh my, yes. We went into Marseille, France, and brought some back. We went up into Calcutta, India. We went up into Pisa. I've got a picture of the Leaning Tower of Pis a. 26 |
