| Abstract |
Beam (b. 1923) spent his early childhood in Ely, Nevada, where his father was a forest supervisor. The family later moved to Holladay, Utah, where he graduated from Granite High School and attended the University of Utah. He was in the ROTC program at the time of his enlistment in the Navy in May 1941. He served on the Colorado and the Dickerson before entering the Naval Academy in 1942 as a Midshipman in the 20th Company. He later reenlisted as a 3rd Class Bo's'n Mate and joined the crew of a submarine bound for Palau. After being wounded near Tarawa he was assigned to an underwater demolition team and participated in the Guam and Okinawa invasions. He received the Silver Star. Interviewed by Winston Erickson. 103 pages. |

Show harle A. "Red" Beam Jul 11 2001 fired him. I have no idea. He wa a great guy. He went down the treet to another little tartup electronic company and w nt t work there. And hi secretary ay the fir t phone call he made wa to me. He aid, "Get your butt down here. I know you're in a world of hurt up there." I aid, "Okay. Give me a couple of weeks. I've got some stuff to straighten out, and then I'll be down ." I walked in and he was on the phone. I says, "Well, as long as your busy, give me a copy of the policies and procedures, and I'll read them. He says, "That's your first job, write them." I became his staff assistant. It was a wonderful company. There's a new book out about ... WIN: Which company was this? RED: · SDS, Scientific Data Systems. WIN: Oh, yeah. RED: Something about-well, let me go get it and I'll show it to you. (Pause in tape) WIN: Okay, before I messed up the tape we were tallGng about the company you worked in that went public and then it got all messed up. And then you went where? RED: I went to Scientific Data Systems as staff assistant to the CEO. And the first Friday I was there-as I walked in I guess we haven't got this part of it-Dan was on the phone, as he usually was. And I said, "As long as you're on the phone, let me read the policies and procedures." And he said, "Well, that's your first job, write them." And Friday his secretary came to me and said, "How much money are you making?" I said, "I 90 |
