| Abstract |
Mr. Donkin (b. 1922) was born in Salt Lake City, Utah. He discusses his schooling, childhood, family and the Depression. He graduated from the University of Utah in 1943 in mechanical engineering. He hired with Vega Aircraft in Burbank, California, making B-17 bombers. He enlisted in the Navy in 1944 and took basic training at Great Lakes. He was sent to Del Monte, California and Treasure Island for more schooling. The war ended during this time. He was then assigned to Daystar LSM-218 where he was in charge of all electronic equipment while delivering supplies around the Philippine area and into China. He discusses his experiences during this time. He was separated from the Navy in July 1946 in Shoemaker, California, with an Electronic Technician 2nd Class rating. Mr. Donkin worked as an engineer and spent 25 years with Hercules before retiring in 1986. Interviewed by Becky Lloyd. 70 pages. |

[Editor 's note: The Lockheed Constellation was a four-engine propeller-driven airliner built by Lockheed between 1943 and 1958 at its Burbank, California, U 'A, facility. A total of 85 6 aircraft were produced in four models, all distinguished by a distinctive triple-tail design and graceful, dolphin-shaped fuselage. It was used as both a civilian airliner and C-69 and C-121 US. military air transport planes. Constellations saw service in the Berlin Airlift and as the presidential aircraft for President Eisenhower.] I ended up working on the XP2Vl, which was the Neptune bomber. We had a wooden mock-up built. That's what they had me working on before I left to go in the Navy. [Editor's note: The Lockheed XP2V1 became the Lockheed P-2 Neptune (until 1963 the P2V Neptune). It was a twin-engine, prop-driven naval patrol bomber and antisubmarine warfare (ASW) aircraft for the United States Navy between 1947 and 1978. It replaced the PV-1 Ventura and PV-2 Harpoon and was replaced in turn with the P-3 Orion.] BEC: Really? That's cool. FRE: It was fun. Of course, I was still pretty young. BEC: That's right. So what did you eventually get to do? FRE: What I ended up doing is they trained me to be a weight control engineer.
