Show JA : Okay ur . When you g t back tat id r ally quickly what m d u w nt t get involved with the VFW? LOW: Well I knew I was eligible for the VFW when I got hom because I kn w what the eligibility was. But I didn t really get involved in it until 58 and it s just one of th s things: when you join something, if you' re going to be active in it they keep moving thi s. "Will you do this, will you do that?" And the first thing you know, you've grown into it. And I went on through and eventually- a little bit after I had got ... Well, I'd been working for GM and I was working second shift so I finally got on day shift and that's, I guess, when I got in the VFW. It was probably about '58- well, no, I signed up in '58 when I was on days for a few days and I actually didn't get involved in the VFW until about '63 or '64 when I actually got involved in it, though I'd been a member. And then I went through the post chairs, the district chairs and the county chairs and I ended up - and, of course, I was a state chaplain for nineteen years. JAS: Wow. LOW: So right now, I don't have any- I'm involved in the state on a- the state of Michigan has a Camp Trotter up by Newaygo and I'm involved on the Camp Trotter Committee, but my wife is, of course, the state press liaison, too. Her name is Pearl Elston. She was state president in ' 85, '86. And I retired from GM after thirty-five years. At the time of my retirement I was the plant engineer. I was an hourly electrician for eleven years and then I went up to master mechanics just as a basic engineer and kept on studying, of course. I didn't have a degree |
