Show October to come home so I had a short tour over in Korea really. I did a 1 t f dif[i r nt things over in Korea, though. JAS: How long had the war been going on when you got orders? LOW: Well, it started in - what was it? Late 49 was it or ' 50? It started in 49 or 50. But I did a lot of interesting things. One time when I was over there in Korea we - JAS: - Well, really quickly, what was it like getting over there? How did you get there? LOW: Well, I rode the boat over to Korea from Seattle - that was thirteen days- the Yokohama. And across Japan on - after we got re-outfitted, across Japan on one of those narrow gauge trains through Sasebo and a midnight ferry to Pusan and then got assigned to our units from Pusan. JAS: Did you have anybody who was going over there with you? LOW: No. JAS: Okay. LOW: I was- when you go to repo depot, you don't go over as a unit, you just go over as more or less ... I did know one other fellow that went over there with me, but he was from a different- or, from my outfit, the 973 rct, but a different company. I was from A company, he was from C company. I knew him vaguely, but in other words you go over there and you don't know anybody generally. JAS: And had you traveled very much before this? LOW: I'd been around the country a little bit, but not much. JAS: Never overseas, then. LOW: No, no. Never been overseas before. JAS: And what was Japan like? |
