Show THERON H. YATE PT M R2 2004 THE: The sergeant said, ' Go home and go where you want. We don t n ed you anymore." BEC: You were a free man. So you didn't end up saving any money at all by doing that? THE: No, I was halfway home and things got tough. I wasn't doing so good hitchhiking. I thought ... I went down to the train station to see if I could get home. But I didn't save any money, that hitchhiking didn't. BEC: That's too bad. So you got back home. Had your brother come back yet? THE: My brother came back before I did. BEC: You said that you also had a third brother who went in, too. THE: Well, he went to Alaska. That's where he spent his time was in Alaska. BEC: What branch of the service was he in? THE: I don't know. BEC: All three of you came home, which must have been a relief to your mother. THE: Yes, and none of us got injured. We all got home in good shape. BEC: That's good. So what did you do once you got back? Did you get your job at the railroad again? THE: No, not the railroad. I'd worked on planes. I went up there (Hill AFB) and they said, "No, we've got more people up here than we know what to do with." They said, "What kind of work can you do?" I said, "I'm a mechanic." They said, "Gee, wiz, you can get all the mechanic's work you want in Salt Lake. You can get all the work you want." So I came home and I went to work on cars. BEC: Oh, here in Salt Lake you got a job? 21 |
