Show THERON H. Y ATE PT B R 2, 2004 BEC: So they notified you that you' d be coming up to be drafted, but it took a y ar for it to happen? THE: No, they just called me when they called. When they called, I went. They didn't call me like the younger ages, I guess. I was older and wouldn' t be too good at the military. They wanted number one men in the military, I guess. Anyway, that's what I thought. But anyway, I didn't go until a little less than a year after my brother went in. Anyway, I stayed in the Air Force. BEC: So you were in the Army Air Corps? THE: Yes. BEC: So when you finally were drafted, did you go to basic training first? THE: Yes. BEC: Where was that? THE: I guess it was down in Stockton, California. We were there for a while. BEC: Do you remember much about your basic training in Stockton? THE: Yes, I know what we did. We learned to march and which way to tum. We took a five-mile hike with gas masks carrying our guns and stuff like that. BEC: Were you still in good shape when you went to basic training? THE: Yes. BEC: So that wasn't too difficult for you, the physical part? THE: No. BEC: Did you make any good friends while you were in basic training that you've kept in touch with? THE: Yes, I met two guys who were from Utah. 8 |
