Show FRANCINE OREN EN pril14 2004 F : Oh I was ery homesick. It was very difficult. I'm a member of the hurch of 1 u Christ of Latter Day Saints and we have several volumes of scripture in addition to the Bible, that we hold sacred. And I was informed that I would only be allowed to have one religious book in my locker. So, I had to choose. Besides the Bible, we believe in the Book of Mormon, and The Doctrine and Covenants, and the Pearl of Great Price that are sacred scriptures in the LDS Church. And I had to choose one of those. I could not have mo1ethan one religious book in my locker. And I remember that very clearly. I started thinking, what have I gotten myself into if I can't even have some freedom of religion to have my scriptures that were important to me in my locker. But, I was able to overcome that. I just kept telling myself this is just a short time I will be in boot camp, and we were able to get through it. FHM: How long was your boot camp? FS: It was eight weeks. FHM: Can you explain what the LDS Church is? FS: It's the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. FHM: Do you remember any of your instructors while you were in boot camp? FS: I don't remember them by name. We had some career women in the navy, chief petty officers, who were over us that were extremely, extremely tough, by the book, which was a new experience for me. I had been more used to being treated with compassion, or with understanding; making allowances for various situations or circumstances. They did not make any allowances for anything.
