| Abstract |
Dinkelman (b. 1924) was born in Den Helder, Netherlands. He discusses his family, immigration to the U.S., the Depression, working and school. He enlisted in the Army in 1942 and received basic training at Fort Knox, Kentucky, prior to being assigned to the 741st Tank Battalion, A Company, at Fort Meade, Maryland. Dinkelman was sent to the Desert Training Center near Indio, California, then received more training in Louisiana at Camp Pope. Although he traveled to England prior to the invasion, he was detained and missed the actual D-Day invasion, but rejoined his unit on the Continent. He describes his combat activity and duties. During the Bulge, he was assigned to the 2nd Infantry Division and was lhis return to the U. S. following the war. He was separated at Fort Douglas, Utah, then reenlisted in the Army and served in Japan, skippering army boats on MP patrols. Dinkelman Stayed in Reserves until he applied for active duty again as a warrant officer in Vietnam, where he delivered materiel by boats. He continued in active duty several more years before retiring. In civilian life he worked as a machinist. Interviewed by Benjamin Bahlmann. 83 pages. |

Show JOH H. DI 10 B "R 2002 And one of the tanks in B Company had knocked off a bank m wh r and w all had musette bags full of koruna. Czechoslovakia money is the koruna, quivalent fa mark or something. o we collected all we could get and we bought a bunch of lumber dug a great big hole and build a big icebox, several truckloads of sawdust put all around and ice. Over there they didn't have refrigeration, but in the wintertime they cut blocks of ice in a stream or a lake and they buried it in sawdust and that's what, in the summer months, that's their cold ... BJB: Storage. JHD: Yes. Then we bought truckloads of beer, Pilsen beer. And we put it in this icebox and we sat around for a couple of months drinking beer and playing baseball (laughs). BJB: In Czechoslovakia, of course, no particular. .. just hold your ground there? JHD: Well, there was nothing to do. We were out in the middle of nowhere near Pilsen. Finally the day come when we went back. They had embarkation posts and they named them after cigarettes: Camp Chesterfield, Camp Lucky Strike, and so forth, Camp Camel. And we went back to Camp Lucky Strike and there we processed for our trip home and we come home on the General George Washington, a big troop ship. Come into New York with all the fire boats. BJB: Yes, tell me about that. JHD: Big sign there, Welcome home _[unclear]_. BJB: How soon after the war-the war ends in May, of course-when did you get back? JHD: Well, we come back in ... they had what they call the point system. BJB: Right. 70 |
