| Abstract |
Dinkelman (b. 1924) was born in Den Helder, Netherlands. He discusses his family, immigration to the U.S., the Depression, working and school. He enlisted in the Army in 1942 and received basic training at Fort Knox, Kentucky, prior to being assigned to the 741st Tank Battalion, A Company, at Fort Meade, Maryland. Dinkelman was sent to the Desert Training Center near Indio, California, then received more training in Louisiana at Camp Pope. Although he traveled to England prior to the invasion, he was detained and missed the actual D-Day invasion, but rejoined his unit on the Continent. He describes his combat activity and duties. During the Bulge, he was assigned to the 2nd Infantry Division and was lhis return to the U. S. following the war. He was separated at Fort Douglas, Utah, then reenlisted in the Army and served in Japan, skippering army boats on MP patrols. Dinkelman Stayed in Reserves until he applied for active duty again as a warrant officer in Vietnam, where he delivered materiel by boats. He continued in active duty several more years before retiring. In civilian life he worked as a machinist. Interviewed by Benjamin Bahlmann. 83 pages. |

Show JOHN H. DINKELMAN 100 T B R2002 JHD: Yes. BJB: To do that, did you discuss that with your parents? JHD: I don't recall discussing it with them. I was pretty independent in many way . BJB: I guess that's how Holland's schooling is, is it not? They pretty much put you in options, trade school? JHD: Well, I didn't do any schooling in Holland; I was too young. Maybe kindergarten, something like that. BJB: Okay, so you did the trade association. Did you get your certificates before you ... JHD: No, I went in the Army. BJB: Okay. So you didn't get into the Navy because of your glasses. Did that upset you? JHD: Well, I was aware that my eyesight was limited-I was quite near-sighted. The Army didn't care (laughs). You wear glasses? Fine. That's good, because I had 20/20 with the glasses, you know. I'd been on several high-powered rifle teams and did quite a bit of shooting and so forth. BJB: Anyway, you decided to join up with the Army. Did you go in with anyone else? JHD: No, I went in alone. BJB: Was that here in Salt Lake? JHD: At the recruiting station. I asked, because I volunteered, I could ask what branch of service. So I said, well, you're pretty safe inside of a tank (laughs). Anyway, that's how I got started in the Army. They sent me to Fort Knox, Kentucky, for my basic training. From there into the 741 st Tank Battalion. 7 |
