| Abstract |
Dinkelman (b. 1924) was born in Den Helder, Netherlands. He discusses his family, immigration to the U.S., the Depression, working and school. He enlisted in the Army in 1942 and received basic training at Fort Knox, Kentucky, prior to being assigned to the 741st Tank Battalion, A Company, at Fort Meade, Maryland. Dinkelman was sent to the Desert Training Center near Indio, California, then received more training in Louisiana at Camp Pope. Although he traveled to England prior to the invasion, he was detained and missed the actual D-Day invasion, but rejoined his unit on the Continent. He describes his combat activity and duties. During the Bulge, he was assigned to the 2nd Infantry Division and was lhis return to the U. S. following the war. He was separated at Fort Douglas, Utah, then reenlisted in the Army and served in Japan, skippering army boats on MP patrols. Dinkelman Stayed in Reserves until he applied for active duty again as a warrant officer in Vietnam, where he delivered materiel by boats. He continued in active duty several more years before retiring. In civilian life he worked as a machinist. Interviewed by Benjamin Bahlmann. 83 pages. |

Show JOHN H. DINKELMAN 10 B R 2002 BJB: Two years for winter, but you were in England th fir t wint rand th you were actually ... oh, what happened during the Bulge on hristmas Day? Were you busy? JHD: Well, the only thing I remember about Christmas is that the sky cleared and then we got our air support. We used to cuss them, "You lucky bastard, you sleep between sheets at night," but they were still, they did their job. We were down there in the mud, but watch them dog fights. Sometimes they didn't win. BJB: Did you ever run into a downed airman? Did you ever come across any of them? JHD: No. BJB: You mentioned at wars end, did you liberate the prison camp? Did you go there? JHD: Yes, after we got, after we lost that track. BJB: How did you get out of that? JHD: Well, we hiked into an area. We wanted to scout around the area to see and we come across a quarry that had guard towers, barbed wire fence around it, and it had a bunch of women and kids in there, young boys, women. We, I guess we shot the lock off the gate. Anyway, we opened up the gate and they were allowed, they could come out. The Germans had fled. So these people-and they were Poles and Russians, women and kids-of course, some of them could speak enough German and with my little bit of German-Dutch and German are very close-we could communicate. So we took four or five of those young boys, I'd say twelve or fourteen years old, and we would go out at night and hit these German farmhouses. Bang on the door, [in Germans sounds like "Auf bacca.
