| Abstract |
Schiele (b. 1956) was born in Davenport, Iowa, and lived in Denver, Colorado, Cheyenne, Wyoming and Granger, Utah. Steven talks about his decision to enlist in the Air Force in high school, which was influenced by his brothers' service and seeing a Jimmy Stewart movie called Strategic Air Command when he was young. He discusses basic training where he became a squad leader. After basic training he went to Chanute Air Force Base where he became a general vehicle maintenance mechanic and then reported to Francis E. Warren for three and a half years. He describes his duties and his life with his family at Francis E. Warren. He talks about his decision not to reenlist with the Air Force after serving for four years. After his enlistment with the Air Force, Steven joined the Air National Guard because it allowed him to be closer to planes. He describes his work for the Air National Guard during the eighties were he was deployed to Moron, Spain several times. In the nineties Steven worked as a crew chief and was able to see the world. He describes his deployments to the United Arab Emirates, Italy, and Kosovo. He talks about the conditions and the atmosphere with the locals in Souda Bay, Crete where they were stationed during the Kosovo mission. After this Steven became student flight coordinator in charge of new recruits and then a first sergeant. Interviewed by John C. Worsencroft. 39 pages. |

Show teven chicle 22 rua 2010 understood that we were getting $89 a day per diem which again, y u b ing in th military understand you can't eat $89 a day. o they were with what I explain d arli r with the protests, we were locked down from the standpoint that we were not allowed to go into Chania at the beginning. So the storekeepers and stuff thought, well, listen can we come out and set up our wares out in front of the base and you can come outside of the gate and look at them. We're still thinking terrorists here, man, we're not going to do this. We're still two years to the aft of Kobashi [?] Towers and nobody wants to find themselves involved in that. So that didn't work out too well. So a couple of weeks wnet by and the Chamber of Commerce, if you will, from that area, approached the base commander. Maybe we could come set up our wares inside your enlisted club, a more secure area and maybe your people would want to frequent that and buy some of our local, or contribute to our local economy. They do a balacing act. That isn't the point. But there was still the stigma of you know what, all this graffiti outside the base, but you don't want us to come into Chania; you don't want us, yet you'll take our money. It got to the point where, we're getting towards the end ... by thew ay, we were from 18 May through the second week in July and we were reconstituted and we came home. But in that period of time, like mid-June, Kosovo operations were winding down. We'd done our job there from the air standpoint. Our wing commander at Ramstein's considering our reconstitution. What he wasn't to do is he thinks he's got us, we're his. He came up and counseled with our wing commander for the 191 st. He was a very down to earth kind of guy, traditional Guardsman and air tech. I remember overhearing the conversation out on the flight line. Colonel Johnson let this wing commander from Ramstein know simply this ... well, [ shuffling noise] what this is. He's the one that signed this, I' 11 get back to 32 |
