| Abstract |
Schiele (b. 1956) was born in Davenport, Iowa, and lived in Denver, Colorado, Cheyenne, Wyoming and Granger, Utah. Steven talks about his decision to enlist in the Air Force in high school, which was influenced by his brothers' service and seeing a Jimmy Stewart movie called Strategic Air Command when he was young. He discusses basic training where he became a squad leader. After basic training he went to Chanute Air Force Base where he became a general vehicle maintenance mechanic and then reported to Francis E. Warren for three and a half years. He describes his duties and his life with his family at Francis E. Warren. He talks about his decision not to reenlist with the Air Force after serving for four years. After his enlistment with the Air Force, Steven joined the Air National Guard because it allowed him to be closer to planes. He describes his work for the Air National Guard during the eighties were he was deployed to Moron, Spain several times. In the nineties Steven worked as a crew chief and was able to see the world. He describes his deployments to the United Arab Emirates, Italy, and Kosovo. He talks about the conditions and the atmosphere with the locals in Souda Bay, Crete where they were stationed during the Kosovo mission. After this Steven became student flight coordinator in charge of new recruits and then a first sergeant. Interviewed by John C. Worsencroft. 39 pages. |

Show teven chiele 22 brua 2 10 came over and protesting in fron of of ouda Bay rete. hat s a Na val 1r t ti n th r and supply center. They protested in front of the gates and they graffi tied all ar und th entry points to the bse in that area. They had signs up, Nazi killers and all thi tuff. I looked at that and I thought, you know, it probably took me back, but I wonder how our boys from World War II and Korea felt, and Vietnam. The things that were said about them. And they were just doing their job. So that wore heavy on us, but because it was just a small Naval air station, we were not billeted on the base. We were placed on a place called Nafti, which is short for NATO Missile Test Range, and I'm not quite sure I got the acronym to line up. But we called it "nasty" (laughs). But we came into a bare base situation. The Guard does, we do that a lot. But we came to a bare base situation. We had nominal security. That was right after, that was in between the [WAV20, 0:26] Towers, so the Air Force was very concerned about protection of force. So the first couple of days we had a bus come pick us up outside the gate. That wasn't playing well at all. WE were leaving ourselves wide open for terrorist threats. So we had to rent about 13 5 rental cars on the base and we'd rotate them every ten days so they couldn't get license plate numbers and figure out who we were. We were booted off beaches. Obviously, as I said earlier, try and hide the fact that you're American anywhere in Europe. It just doesn't happen. They would find out that we were Americans and they would ... we were instructed, we were briefed when we got there that you know, don't confront them. Do go in there. But, anyway, we put the flights crews above a city called Chania, which is a major city there. That little friction between the crew chiefs and the pilots and their crews, because they were living in a hotel, not that spectacular of a hotel, but it was a 30 |
