| Abstract |
Schiele (b. 1956) was born in Davenport, Iowa, and lived in Denver, Colorado, Cheyenne, Wyoming and Granger, Utah. Steven talks about his decision to enlist in the Air Force in high school, which was influenced by his brothers' service and seeing a Jimmy Stewart movie called Strategic Air Command when he was young. He discusses basic training where he became a squad leader. After basic training he went to Chanute Air Force Base where he became a general vehicle maintenance mechanic and then reported to Francis E. Warren for three and a half years. He describes his duties and his life with his family at Francis E. Warren. He talks about his decision not to reenlist with the Air Force after serving for four years. After his enlistment with the Air Force, Steven joined the Air National Guard because it allowed him to be closer to planes. He describes his work for the Air National Guard during the eighties were he was deployed to Moron, Spain several times. In the nineties Steven worked as a crew chief and was able to see the world. He describes his deployments to the United Arab Emirates, Italy, and Kosovo. He talks about the conditions and the atmosphere with the locals in Souda Bay, Crete where they were stationed during the Kosovo mission. After this Steven became student flight coordinator in charge of new recruits and then a first sergeant. Interviewed by John C. Worsencroft. 39 pages. |

Show teven chiele 22 rua 2 10 includes an eight hour preflight with engine run. Ours is like I aid we land, air er w gets off, maintenance crews come on. WE put the gas on the airplane. U ually two h ur we close her up and we're done for the day. So we marveled at that and we thanked th good old Lord that we were KC-13 5 crew chiefs. During another deployment we had an officer that did a phenomenal fly-by. I'll never forget that. That was in 1984 while we were at Moron. He did a low level pass over the field. We were pretty well in unrestricted air space. It was by no means dangerous. Close to the ground? Yes. But, man, it looked awesome. I can still see that airplane coming down the runway, flying over the runway, at probably fifty feet off the ground and it was just, large aircraft just look so awesome at that altitude. As I say, that moves us through the '80s. In 1990 ... let me back up. I had a supervisor. His name was Blaine Abbott. He used to wear a toupee. One morning as we got ready to go to work, he and the senior NCO of the shop, which was another air tech or technician, shared a room. I picked him up to go to work that morning. He'd been out the night before indulging in some spirits and he forgot to take his toupee off. He was laying in the bed, kind of, his hair was up at the top of the head of the bed, he was down. As I looked in, it looked like Bozo the Clown had lost something (laughs). During that same deployment, too, Blaine had fallen off the wagon. He was trying to drink less and not b~ as drunk as often. He used to have a favorite stool at the Air National Guard when we had an enlisted club out there. Anyway I remember one night we'd come back from the hotel where it was basically the enlisted club. I remember, I didn't say this, but Moron was a bare base and Moron was also an alternate landing site for the space shuttle. So it's a bare base with US military presence 14 |
