I said, "I don't want to bail out." He said, "I know, but sometimes it happens. We've got to be prepared. Here's pilot insurance." I had rudder pedals back there that were (folded) down flat. He said, "Pull up your rudder pedals. Now your stick's over there. Unsnap your stick and put it in." I put my stick in. He said, "Okay, now. Put your feet on the controls. Here's how we turn left. You push with your left pedal and you put the stick over to the left and it banks us over to the left. Feel that? Isn't that nice?" "That's nice, Jack." "You do the same thing with the right." It was cloudy below. We couldn't fly a mission so we were orbiting back and forth over our own lines. He said, "That's the way you keep the plane in the air." I said, "Oh, great." "Isn't that nice?" We were shouting back and forth. He was a good sense of humored guy. He said, "Yup, that's pilot insurance." "Well, how do I get it on the ground?" "Oh," he said, "That's right. You've got to get it on the ground." He was playing me for a sucker. He said, "Here's what you do. I'm going to teach you how to land this plane." I said, "Oh, no." He said, "Well, if we get hit, we're going to have to land on one of those little roads down there." They were little ox-roads or something. I said, "Jack! No!" He said, "Okay now, hold onto it.
