| Abstract |
Benson (b. 1923) grew up in Parowan, Utah. He discusses his family, farming, schooling, and work. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps, was inducted at Fort Douglas, and sent to Pullman, Washington, for civilian flight training in March 1943. From there, his training included: pre-flight at Santa Ana, California; basic flight at Marana Air Base in Tucson, Arizona; and advanced training at Pecos, Texas. He was sent to Yuma, Arizona, for B-17 gunnery training before joining his crew in Lincoln, Nebraska. Transported across the Atlantic on the Queen Mary in March 1945, he joined the 8th Air Force, 94th Bombardment Group, 410th Bombardment Squadron (Heavy) at Bury St. Edmund, England. His first mission was in April 1945. He completed six missions before the war ended. After the war, he helped ship supplies into Germany and other war-affected countries. He returned home during the summer of 1946 for discharge. Benson worked as a school teacher in civilian life. Interviewed by Benjamin Bahlmann. 59 pages. |

Show IMO K.BE 0 2 2002 Actually, while I wa there, I graduated from the Uni er ity of Idah . F ur f my fi children were born in Mo cow, Idaho. Our la tone wa born here, when w m d down here. BB: When did you move down here? You were up there quite a while? SKB: Ju t four or five years. BB: You were there because of school or did you have a job up there a well? SKB: School and work. I worked my way through. BB: What did you graduate in? What was your major? SKB: Industrial education, math, history and coaching. I coached at the junior high school in Moscow. Then I taught a year, coached basketball and taught math, history and shop, auto mechanics, out in Wells, Nevada. Then my little big brother became a famous star at BYU so moved over here and built my first home on the corner. I started the basketball program at the Utah Trade College in Provo. I taught there for ten or eleven years. I taught automotive but was getting carbon monoxide poisoning. So when I came out of that, I drove a school bus until I retired. BB: And when did you move into this house? SKB: I built this house in 1968 when we had too many kids for the little house over there. BB: Your other house was on the other side of the street? SKB: No, on the north side right next to us. We owned a whole acre here when only one road existed up to Rock Canyon. So I sold that half and built on this half. BB: Let me jump back real quick. When you were delivering all these supplies into Germany, did it ever occur to you or anyone with you that you could make a good profit selling it on the side to the black market? 53 |
