| Abstract |
Mr. Pearson was born in Meadow, Utah, on April 30, 1921. He joined the ROTC at the University of Utah and was activated in 1943. Received basic training at Camp Roberts, California, then returned to Fort Douglas where he joined the Army Air Corps. Received pre-flight training at Santa Ana, California; primary flight training at Blithe, California; and basic flight training at Pomona, California. After graduation, he picked up a crew and orders to Dohazari, India. As part of the 1st Combat Cargo Group, 4th Combat Cargo Squadron, they flew, mostly in C-46s and C-47s, from that base into Burma, supplying mainly British troops. Mr. Pearson discusses his experiences during this time. After the war ended, he was based in Kumming, China, flying Chinese dignitaries to various locations. Later, he transported Chinese Nationalist troops. Left China in December 1945 and was separated on April 15, 1946 as a first lieutenant. Mr. Pearson received the Distinguished Flying Cross and an oak leaf cluster for over 500 combat hours of flying. Interviewed by Joel Calderon. 28 pages. |

Show THIS IS AN INTERVIEW WITH EVAN PEAR ON ON APRIL 5, 2002. TH INTERVIEWER IS JOEL C. CALDERON. THIS I THE PROJECT" A VI G THE LEGACY: AN ORAL HISTORY OF AMERICA'S WAR VETERAN " TAPE No. 346. JOE: This is an interview with Evan Pearson of Salt Lake City, Utah. We are also joined by Evan's wife, Maxine J. Pearson. Today is April 5, 2002. This is part of the "Saving the Legacy Project". My name is Joel Calderon. Evan was a US Army Air Corps C-47 pilot who served in the China, Burma, India (CBI) Theater during World War II. Let's start off with where you were born and where did you grow up and how you ended up in the Air Corps? EVA: I was born in Meadow, April 30, 1921 to Naomi Duncan Pearson and Alvin E. Pearson. [Editor's note: Meadow is just south of Fillmore, Utah.] I lived there for a year and a half. There was absolutely no work in that area of Meadow. My father moved to Bingham, where he started working for Utah Copper Mines, which is now Kennecott Copper. I lived there and went to school in Bingham until 1936, when my father received a veteran's bonus. That enabled him to buy a home in Midvale. This was in 1936. JOE: Your father was a World War I veteran? EVA: Yes. JOE: What service? EVA: Actually, he served in San Diego in the band. I don't know what branch he was 1n. JOE: I can tell from that picture, he was either in the Army or Marine Corps. EVA: It must have been the Army. It wasn't the Marine Corps. JOE: Okay. |
