Show ANN HARP 1 2 01 Highland Drive and she was really nice. And she said "Would you mind uld y u b offended if I corrected you if you said something wrong? And I said Pl a d . hat the only way I'm going to learn." She was really nice. And so by doing all that you picked up the language. BEC: Yeah. ANN: And then, of course, had to go to the university too; took some lessons there. And also once we became, wanted to become a citizen, after five years, you had to learn all that. BEC: Right. ANN: So that picked up the language too. So that helped. So, you know, I feel very strongly, when you come to another country and you want to make it your home, you need to learn the language 'cause it's much better for yourself. BEC: So how long did you clean houses? ANN: For about two years and then I wanted a baby so bad that I finally got, well I got pregnant while I was still-because that last lady on Highland Drive, she had a little cottage on the end of her driveway and then the big house where they lived. And I would go every day and clean the house, and my husband would kind of keep up the garden. And we lived in that cottage rent-free. BEC: Oh. I see. ANN: And that worked out really well. But it only had a living room and a kitchen and one bedroom. So when I became pregnant, we moved out. We moved to another place on Third A venue, which wasn' t a whole lot bigger, but it was a pretty nice 33 |
