Show CORA LEE JOHNSON MARCH 6, 2002 LOS girls, but right when we was there. And Melba Merritt said, "Well, what are you doing Cora Lee?" And I told her, "I'm doing the post office." "How'd you get that job?" --oh, I just," then I just told her about it. So I finally said, "What are you doing, Melba?" She said, "I'm running a freight elevator." She had been the lead singer with Ralph Malachi's band from Utah County. She was a darling girl. You've probably never heard of Ralph Malachi. BEC: The name sounds vaguely familiar. COR: Well, they were out of Helper. Oh, he had a good band. And years ago, they all had big bands. They played the Arrowhead, the Saratoga, the Saltair and all. But she sang with him. Well, lo and behold, here came Victor Mature in onto that base and they were going to do Guys and Dolls and they had an interview, they interviewed the SPARS and Melba Merritt interviewed with them and she got a job in the chorus. So, she left and she went on tour. BEC: So the was going on tour? COR: Yep. BEC: It wasn't just for the base only? COR: No. She went on tour. BEC: But she got off the freight elevator. Is that how she finished up her career, or don't you know? COR: Well, I know this much, she married a boy by the name of Teddy Martindale from Springville and I guess they'd been high school sweethearts and he had a new car and she married him. But then Teddy went in the service and she went in the service; Teddy was in the army. And when Teddy got home, she got home, she divorced 33 |
