| Abstract |
Teran (b. 1922) describes a difficult childhood in New Mexico during the Depression, and recalls his education at Fort Lewis College, army enlistment, and schooling at Scott air base in Illinois. He also details his experiences in flight training, B-17 crew assignments, and crossing the Atlantic to England, where he served in the 8th Air Force, 379th Bomb Group, 527th Squadron, based at Kimbolton Field near London. He flew twenty missions before being shot down and captured by German soldiers, ending up at Stalag Luft 3. He recounts his days as a prisoner of war, including a forced march away from the advancing Russions, incarceration in Stalag 7A, liberation, and his return to the United States. 51 pages. |

TAPE NO. 18 AND 19. WIN: Today is May 23 , 2000. This is an interview with Robert D. Teran. This is part of the "Saving the Legacy" project and I am Winston Erickson. Bob, where and when were you born? BOB: I was born in a small town in a place called Blanco, New Mexico. WIN: Blanco, New Mexico. What part ofNew Mexico is that? BOB: Northern corner. Colorado was thirty-six miles away. WIN: Up by Farmington? BOB: Well, Farmington is in New Mexico. Durango is the nearest town in Colorado. WIN: And who are your parents? BOB: My parents are Joseph and Mabel Teran. WIN: Had they been in Blanco for their lives, or did they move there? BOB: No, my father 's father was from Spain and I guess they were pretty rich. He went to France, met a lady, and they married and they went to Mexico. My father 's parents wanted him to be a priest. He didn't want to, so he just left. WIN: Kind of hard to be a priest if you are married, isn't it? BOB: Well, my father wasn't married at that time. He left and came to New Mexico, and there he met my mother. My mother, her parents were frontiers people, you might say, because they went to Oregon from Arizona and New Mexico and came back. My |
