Show ELIZA FIFE BEC: The house doesn t exist any more? SEPTEMBER 17, 2001 ELI: Right, uh-huh. So they let us rent, or live in that one, so that [phone rings]. Turn that off. BEC: Okay. [turns tape off] ELI: Anyway this really had nothing to do with the war. BEC: Oh, that's all right you know, we're looking at your whole life. It just puts the war in the perspective of your whole life. ELI: Which really wasn't that drastic, but, anyway. So we came over here and we lived there and then we lived in that rock house for a while. And Mom had to cook on a coal stove. I don t know how she survived that, I really don' t. She was fortyseven years old at the time. So was my dad. My dad was just a year younger than my mom and when he came over he didn't have a job. So he worked as a hod carrier which is the dirt carrier for a guy that- brick mason. So that was awful hard for him. BEC: Oh, tough work. ELI: Yeah because he wasn't used to that until he finally found a job in his own profession. But for us it was fun cause we were all, you know, I went to work as a secretary in the temple and everybody had a job, us kids we did, and we did great. But, for my parents it was a real, real difficult thing. BEC: You know I was thinking about you coming over with your brother and sister. That must have been just a grand adventure. 24 |
