Show ELIZA FIFE BEC: SEPTEMBER 17,2001 Yeah. And you said, too, I wanted to ask you this. You said your father was part of the home guard or whatever it was called. And he was called out a few times, just locally or did he have to actually leave Bern and go somewhere else? ELI: Well, he did have to leave Bern for training, I think, for about three months or something like that. Other than that he was pretty well at home and they did have their regular meetings and regular things that they had to do in checking things out, making sure everything was all right. See, Bern was never bombed. BEC: Yeah. ELI: So we're lucky in that respect. BEC: So I imagine that would make it, then, less scary for you as a child as your dad left to go in the army. ELI: Exact! y. BEC: ELI: bombs had fallen. BEC: ELI: BEC: ELI: Because you weren't being bombed. Exactly. It wasn't nearly as frightening as it would have been if It was almost as if dad was going to work, except that he was goneHe was gone and he wasn't home. Right. But, yeah, that's true. It must have been stressful for your mother, I imagine. That's what I say, that s why I think she about had a nervous breakdown by the time the war ended. BEC: ELI: Because she had been so strong? Oh, yeah. 18 |
