Grant Morrell (b. 1924) enlisted in the Marines' "Mormon Battalion Platoon" in 1942. He was a member of the signal corps in Hawaii, the Marshall Islands, and Clearfield, Utah. He served as a recruiter in the Reserve and at Camp Pendleton during the Korean War before retiring in 1954. 32 pages. |

Show GRANT MORRELL R 11 2 01 they brought in two double trailers and had a real nic small chap 1 with a c up] f classrooms and we just worked with the branch president and all ofth m mb r referrals that would come through the missionary department. We som tim s w uld deliver a Book of Mormon or a video or any other item that they were interested in to people. We were able to help activate, reactivate some who'd stopped attending for one reason or another. We met weekly with our missionary group in one of the cities nearby, Salisbury, and had that association. Then they'd have the mission zone conferences every month. And Lois was always asked to sit at the piano, because she played the piano. And she really enjoyed it because she taught seven different people in our branch the basics of how to start the piano, because they had no one. And so we felt that and the people we shared with on preparation day, they called it, which was Monday, it was the day of doing other things than our missionary assignment, we signed up to go to the YMCA and help them there on Mondays. They really enjoyed just having us there in the office to help out and to do other things. But we met a lot of members and non-members there at the YMCA. Brought home at-shirt showing that we worked there as a volunteer (laughs). BEC: Is that right. GRA: But lots of great friends. We still correspond. We have one gal that calls us all the time just to say hello because she loved us so. When October rolled around and our year was up, because that's all we agreed to sign for, they wanted us to extend but we were getting a little tired. And so said goodbye to the mission home and decided to see a little of the country while we were headed back home, because we were in no rush. We went to Wilmington on the coast and had a young niece there, with her husband and three kids, and had a nice visit with her. Then we went to Kitty Hawk and saw where 29 |
