| Abstract |
MacGregor (b. 1923) recalls his childhood in rural New York and describes learning about Pearl Harbor and attempting to enlist in the Air Corps. He was drafted into the army and was assigned training as a combat engineer. Shortly after that he was transferred to the 8th Air Force and sent to bombardier school. MacGregor talks about his training and the trip to England. His first mission was on D-Day with the 702nd Bomber Squadron. He was shot down over Germany and describes his capture and treatment as a prisoner of war. 121 pages. |

Show Malcolm J. MacGregor they gave me a ticket or not. BEN: Ok. MAL: But I didn't have to pay for it. I know that. But somehow ... a ua 2002 BEN: Did you know those orders before you left on your leave or did they send them to you? Do you remember? MAL: No, I had all my orders to report. I had my orders in Texas and it said that I had to report to Salt Lake within "X" number of days, like three or four weeks. So I knew then that I had enough time to go home. Maybe I had the money, I don't remember if I paid to go home or not. I don't remember that but they would have paid me to go from Texas to Salt Lake. So, anyway, I next reported to Salt Lake. I think I got there, I don't know, sometime in early December. BEN: And that would be for formation or for a crew? MAL: No, that was where they stuck us together in the barracks and they'd tried to figure out where they wanted to put us. What kind of crews they wanted to put us on. Whether they wanted to start a new group or, in our case, I was in a replacement unit. RTU, Replacement Training Unit, I think it was. Anyway, I stayed there until they told me that I was assigned and then they sent me to Boise, Idaho. BEN: And that's where you met your crew? MAL: That's where I met the crew and slowly formed up. BEN: How long were you in Salt Lake? MAL: I think I was in Salt Lake about a month. BEN: Oh, really. MAL: Yeah, I was there quite a long time. 28 |
