Allred (b. 1921) served in the U. S. Army from 1942 to 1945. He was in the 246th Engineer Combat Battalion staioned in Salisbury, England prior to traveling to France, Belgium, Holland, and Germany. He finished his tour of duty with the occupation army in Berlin. 54 pages. |

Show I n . llred WIN: A German road, do you remember where that was? GLE: No I don't. WIN: Too bad, you could always go back and look at it and ho 11 y u d'd. GLE: Okay. When I came home I just- of course, it was in November- plann d t go b k t BYU in January and continue my studies. When I got home I found that I was ick. I w nt t th doctor and I found that I had worms. WIN: You got worms over there? GLE: I got worms. One time, I was with a group of soldiers and we were kind of up in noman's land, a small town, and a pig came down the street and one of the guys shot and butchered it and we had some good fresh pork. And I suspect that ... WIN: But not well enough cooked obviously, huh? GLE: Apparently not, I think that was probably it. So I was home a week or two before Thanksgiving, and it just so happened that I was diagnosed just right to the point where on Thanksgiving Day the doctor was treating me, and he ordered me not to eat anything on Thanksgiving Day. WIN: You'd been gone for several years and you couldn't eat on Thanksgiving Day? GLE: So anyway, I planned to go back to school, but there were two high schools right there. One was Roosevelt High School. I came home, and my parents lived in Ogden. I visited with them and then went out to the farm where I was staying with my brother. The Roosevelt High School to the west, and the Alterra High School to the east, were hurting for teachers and needed coaches. So I ended up going to work at Alterra High School, my old alma mater, teaching and 48 |
