Show len E. Allred WI : That was back when the AAU was more pr stigiou th th GLE: That's right. Well it was like the NBA now. See that' h it through college, and the best ballplayers. WIN: So that must have been fun for you? GLE: It was. I played with some real good ballplayers. t it. . t u th t WIN: Then you had to leave. You were over in England in the late spring of about '44? GLE: Yes, that's right. WIN: Did you know when D-day was going to occur? Did you have any idea? l GLE: We didn't know the exact time, but we were eventually divided into three echelons, and I was in the third one. Our first echelon people left our camp and went to prepare for the invasion. WIN: These were people of the engineering battalion that you were in? GLE: Yes, they were in my battalion, and they went and prepared earlier. They were gone that morning when we woke up and the sky was full of planes. You can't imagine that view, just wave, after wave, after wave of planes headed toward France. WIN: Just a wave, after wave? They were taking the airborne troops and supplies, gun ships, and fighter planes? GLE: It was Unreal. It was unreal. I might say the night I was in London, they said it was the night of the longest raid of the war up to that time-of the Germans bombing and stuff. WIN: WiththeV-1's?WeretheyV-1 bombs? GLE: No, they were planes at that time. WIN: Oh, they sent planes over? 21 |
