| Abstract |
Lillian Crenshaw grew up in Independence, Missouri, and received her nurse's training at the University of Kansas. She was sworn into the army at Fort Leavenworth in November 1942, and worked as an operating nurse until her unit was shipped out to North Africa where hospital units were being formed to support the European invasion. Her unit followed the troops ashsore in Salerno, Italy. She spent her entire service time in Italy. 28 pages. |

Show LILLIO AND PETE E the New York harbor was all clogged up! o 1 d din November and in the mean time I had had a birthday - on th 27th r. h they treated us royally! And on the first night we had th mo t 1 1 ! r h and steak, and all this stuff. And everybody was sick all night long b cau used to that kind of food! JOE: You're used to the army food, the hospital food! LIL: Yeah, and then we went to, I was sent to, where is it it was in Iowa Ames Iowa. Oh, Separation Center, Fort Des Moines, Iowa. They just sent us to the nearest place to our home, so when we left Boston then we just scattered, and rode the train home and my mother and dad met me, and then I had to get used to living at home- and that took a little while! JOE: Is there any interesting side stories that you could tell about your experience over there in Europe? LIL: Well, our time in North Africa was nice, because we did have fresh vegetables there. It was interesting, because you always think of Africa as being a jungle and wild animals, but along the north part its all farmland! JOE: You mean the middle part of Africa? LIL: Yeah. JOE: The north part of Africa is just sahara desert. LIL: The only animal, the only camel I saw, was the one they had brought in for people to get their picture taken on, which I didn't do.
