Show MARK COOPER JUNE 6, 2001 MAR: Yeah. A lot bigger engine. And the airplane, well, was about the size of the B-25, but it was a lot more powerful and it had automatic bomb release on it; they could open the bomb bay doors and set the timer for a certain timer and punch a button and it would drop so many bombs at a time then it would stop. BEC: Yeah. So it was pretty high-tech for the time. MAR: It was high-tech. And then we-well, then we were up to the A-26 base, they assigned us to Chanute Field in Illinois. ERM: No. First you went to Marietta at Florida. MAR: Oh, yeah. Then I went to Pensacola, Florida, to a A-26 base down there. And went from Long Beach up this way and the train stopped at Lexington for a ten-day delay. Went into Chicago, south of Chicago, and down across there, these old slow trains, and changed trains a couple of times. ERM: This is on a troop train. MAR: Went down to Pensacola, Florida, and they picked us up in a bus there and went over to the base there in Florida and I was there about three weeks, I guess-a month. And the A-26 squadron had already been made up, two squadrons, and they'd already left the field. So they decided not to make another squadron so they sent us back, my buddy and I, was assigned a crew and they sent us back to Chanute Field in Illinois. BEC: Hold on one second. END OF SIDE A BEC: All right, we're back in business. So it's Chanute Field? 27 |
