There is no prospect whatever that any Union* effort will be effective, I have never known a college started by two denominations to succeed; sooner or later there is a quarrel and then the institution is doomed to death by starvation* or falls into the control of one or the other. If we had a good President for the college, perhaps he could reach Mr. Pierson of Chicago and secure a promise for us also. I think we could then meet the condition.s

Very truly yours,
Sheldon Jackson*
General Agent of Education.

1 enclosure.

*Handwritten inserts in original document; the rest was typewritten.

|
Further Information |
In this letter to G. R. McNiece, Sheldon Jackson expresses his opinion that a college run by two denominations is doomed for failure or to be dominated by one of the denominations in the end. He sends with his letter a copy of Dr. McMillan's letter with "conditions in the East," and suggests that a good president for the college may be able to secure a promise, most likely being financial, from Mr. Pierson. |
