This research paper explores the personal toll of NAFTA on Mexican citizens and highlights how current free trade policies create the conditions where immigration is necessary. It further examines the history of white preference including how the media perpetuates stereotypes of undocumented immigrants as criminals. Next, the paper gives a brief history of Mexican migrant workers and the shift in U.S. policies that created "illegal" immigrants. This research also connects the dots of how the U.S benefits economically from the current free trade policies as well as the construction of an "illegal" race of people. Through the use of personal narratives and photo elicitation undocumented Mexican immigrant men tell stories of their life, the reasons for their migration to the U.S. as well as the discrimination they face daily. Using the participants' narratives this paper asserts there is a personal toll of NAFTA on individuals and families. Last, it discusses the challenges of reframing the immigration debate to an honest discussion of what we are willing to do to others in order to maintain our current level of consumption. |
