Show 29 35. Sugarloaf Mountain ( Figure 27) Moderate intermittent hazard. Like Devil's Castle, this run, at present, is controlled by temporary closure. The traverse to Devil's Castle goes along the top of an extensive slide path, which is in itself excellent skiing in stable conditions. It is possible to throw hand charges onto this slope, but to do so requires climbing over the top of Sugarloaf - a highly impractical situation. Artillery fire has been attempted at Sugarloaf and Devil's Castle from the Albion gun, but the results indicate poor accuracy and a high percentage of duds at this range. Consideration should be given to the placement of an " avalauncher" on the ridge adjacent to Glory Hole. From this point, it should be possible to satisfactorily control Devil's Castle, Sugarloaf, East Baldy, Yellow Trail, and part of Glory Hole. Near the Sugarloaf Lift tower No. 21 and No. 22 is a small area that can slide. This area should be test- skied. 36. Secret Saddle ( Figure 27) Moderate intermittent hazard. Below the lower band of cliffs on Sugarloaf Mountain lies a small lake, frozen over in the winter time. The steep slope above this lake can be reached either by skiing down Sugarloaf from the Devil's Castle Traverse or by traversing out from Devil's Dip. This slope can slide in unstable conditions. When Sugarloaf Mountain runs big, it can come over the lower band of cliffs, run across Secret Lake, and run down the slope below. Control is by temporary closure and hand charging. |
