Show 22 23 « Yellow Trail through Greelev Hill ( Figure 20) This group includes some of the longest, steepest, and most dangerous runs at Alta. The most common access to these slopes is by way of Germania Pass. Occasionally, however, access is from the High Traverse, Greeley Bowl, Greeley Hill, or Eddie's High Nowhere. By closing off the High Traverse and Yellow Trail, skiers can be kept out of this area. 24. East Baldy ( Figure 20) Moderate intermittent hazard. This area, lying between the top of the Sugarloaf Lift and Germania Saddle, consists of two steep gullies, which are heavily, loaded by winds from the west and southwest. Skiers traversing from the top of Sugar-loaf to Germania cross through the center of the slide paths. During a heavy storm, it is often necessary to close this area ( called the East Baldy Traverse). At present, the only way of controlling this slope is by temporary closure and hand- charging. Unfortunately, hand- charging these chutes involves a good deal of time and effort, since " the only way to get into a position to throw the hand charges is to climb up the ridge from Germania Saddle. 25. Glory Hole ( Figure 20) High intermittent hazard. This area and the gully that exists from its bottom ( Glory Gulch) are quickly loaded by storms coming from any direction and are closed whenever a storm of any intensity develops.. The skiing available in this area is not particularly good, since the way out from the bottom of Glory Hole is either down a long, narrow gully or by climbing over the shoulder beside this gully. Yet control must be carried out on the slope, since it is extremely accessible to skiers, being practically underneath the Sugar-loaf Lift. Control is effected by throwing hand charges from the top of the cliffs above the slope. Glory Hole is prone to depth hoar formation; and in years when it exists, particular caution should be exercised here. The slope has the unfortunate configuration of a tea cup. Anyone skiing into it is threatened from a number of directions. The exit from this cirque, Glory Gulch, can usually be adequately controlled by test- skiing, but this should be done with great care since a slide off one of the steep banks of the gully could bury a skier deeply in the v- shaped bottom. This gully can also be controlled by a shot from the Albion gun. |
