Show Mountain slides into the gully to the east and hence down over the Tom Moore Toilet. Flagstaff Shoulder slides down to the west over the Forest Service garage, across the road, and alongside the Deep Powder House as indicated by the photographs. This slide has hit the Alta Lodge's westernmost portion and has caused damage to the Alta Lodge porch. After slides have run from these two paths, the gullys they normally follow may be partially filled and this may result in an extreme hazard to the Deep Powder House, the Shallow Shaft, the Salt Lake Winter Sports Bunkhouse, the Chapel, the Photohaus, and the Alta Lodge. The Shoulder slide can run all the way to Cottonwood Creek. Flagstaff Mountain slide runs down over the Tom Moore parking area to the east of the Alta Lodge. The normal hazard development is first above the highway and then above the Alta area. It is generally a good idea at the time of a road closure to advise people to move their cars out of the signed slide paths and into safe areas. These slide paths are loaded by the same sort of storms that load the slopes above the highway. A wet slide cycle of dangerous proportions does not generally develop on the slide paths above the Alta area, since they have a gentler slope than those down the canyon. This possibility should not be ruled out, however. |
