Peterson finds dinosaur bones in area which will be established as Dinosaur National Monument. U. S. Mail service extended from Uinta Basin to Rangeley, Col. County voters make Vernal the seat of Uintah County. Adolph Jessen, mining engineer, surveys and plots land in Daggett region. Ouray Boarding School opens at Leland ( Randlett). The building which is eventually taken over by the state and then the LDS church, burns down in 1931. Lucerne Land and Water Company, formed by Adolph Jessen, Ellsworth Daggett and R. C. Chambers, build irrigation canals in Daggett area. A telephone line is strung along Nine Mile Canyon route to Fort Duchesnne. Ephriam H. Roberts builds a pottery shop at Naples. Hill Creek and Willow Creek are settled by cattlemen. Mormon colonists, coming principally from Beaver, take up homesteads in Daggett region. Holy Spirit Episcopal Church is built at Leland ( Randlett). Encouraged by rumers of possible railroad across the Uintas, the Green brothers ( Bill, Sanford, John) plan a hunting and fishing resort on Skull Creek. Later they start ranching ( Greendale). U. S. Congress passes law to open Uncompahgre Reservation to entry, but reserves mineral lands to the U. S. Ranchers Cleophas Dowd is shot down and buried on his ranch in Sheep Creek. Uintah National Forest is proclaimed. Manila in Lucerne Valley, Daggett County, is laid out ( not incorporated until 1936). A branch of the Mormon church is organized there. 1898 Miners and ranchers enter Uncompahgre Reservation lands. |
